WoW – A Visa Card!

Are you one of six million or so people who plays WoW (World of Warcraft)? If so, you can now show your “nerdiness” to any and all cashiers, since Blizzard just announced a “Rewards Visa” in conjunction with First National Bank of Omaha.

Here are the card/rewards details:

  • 13 designs offered
  • Earn a free month after making your first purchase
  • Earn one point per dollar spent – 1,500 points can be redeemed for a free month of gametime
  • 0% APR on purchases and balance transfers for 12 months
  • No annual fee

Aside from the novelty/coolness factor (if that’s appealing to you), this is essentially a 1% cashback card, and there are better offers available elsewhere. See my personal rewards approach.

I don’t play WoW, nor would I apply for this card. Still, the main benefit is that a card like this could interest and educate a person about the rewards available by using credit cards (read: “responsibly”). In the university scene, I see people all the time who whip out a check or a debit card to buy items such as meals and books, and I think to myself about how they’re missing out on rewards possibilities, such as cashback and points.

Too many young people take little interest in financial issues, so something like a WoW credit card could be used as a teaching tool, as it provides a more pertinent “reward” than say, airline miles. So, if you have a loved one in your life who plays WoW, perhaps this card could be a way to teach reward systems and responsible credit usage. :-)
